Cremation in Barbados: What Families Should Know
Updated: 4 hours ago

When a loved one passes away, families are faced with important decisions at a time when emotions are overwhelming. Choosing cremation is one of those decisions, and understanding the process can make it easier to move forward with confidence.
Cremation is an alternative to traditional burial that allows families to honour a loved one's life in a way that reflects their wishes, values and beliefs. If you are considering cremation in Barbados, we have prepared a guide below to help you make an informed decision.
Cremation Options in Barbados
Families may consider different arrangements depending on their preferences, beliefs and circumstances.
Direct Cremation
Direct cremation generally refers to cremation without a traditional funeral service taking place beforehand. The arrangements still require professional coordination, the necessary documentation and transportation of your loved one. There is no viewing and your loved one goes from the funeral home directly to the crematorium. You may choose to hold a private memorial or celebration of life at a later date.
Cremation With a Funeral Service
Families who wish to have a formal opportunity to say goodbye can have a funeral service at a church or chapel immediately followed by cremation. You also have the option of having the cremation at a later date, usually within two days of the funeral service.
Private Memorial
Not every family may want a large gathering or a traditional ceremony or perhaps it was the deceased's wishes to have a private and personal farewell. We can coordinate a private memorial for your loved one in an intimate setting that allows you to reflect on their memory with close family and specially invited guests.
What Is the Process for Arranging a Cremation in Barbados?
Step 1: Contact a Funeral Director
The first step is to speak with a funeral director. We will explain the available options and guide you through the necessary arrangements. You should have the basic details of the deceased readily available, including full name, ID number, place and date of death, and whether they were seeing a doctor prior to death. We will assist you with each step of the process and help you understand the decisions that need to be made and what additional information will be required.
Step 2: Complete the Necessary Documentation
Cremation in Barbados is subject to legal and medical requirements. These include the death registration, obtaining medical certification, as well as the necessary authorisation for the cremation. We file and manage these documents on your behalf. You will be asked to sign any relevant documentation authorising us to coordinate the necessary arrangements for you.
Step 3: Select the Type of Farewell You Want
Families should decide whether they would like a viewing, a funeral service, a private ceremony or direct cremation. You may also wish to discuss religious traditions and other personal touches that would help honour your loved one.
Step 4: Coordinate the Cremation Arrangements
Once the necessary requirements have been satisfied, the funeral director coordinates the arrangements with the relevant parties and crematorium. When the cremation will take place depends on the completion of the required documentation, the funeral home receiving clearance from the coroner (warrant), and the date availability at the crematorium (there is only one on island).
How Much Does Cremation Cost in Barbados?
Cremation, as a stand alone service, costs $3213. However, it is not a service that can be rendered on its own, as the cremation process requires additional supportive services. Firstly, cremation can only be facilitated through a funeral home.
A family must obtain the services of a funeral director to manage the cremation process on their behalf. Some additional services which can impact the overall cost include:
Funeral Director's Basic Service Fee (this is how much you pay the funeral home to coordinate and direct the funeral)
Church and chapel fees
Casket (a rental casket for viewing is required)
Transportation (hearse and family cars)
Storage
Embalming and preparation (embalming is legally required for viewing)
Funeral programs, flowers, obituaries, etc.
Is Cremation the Right Choice for Your Family?
There is no right or wrong answer. It comes down to your preference and if your loved one specifically asked to be cremated. You will also need to take into consideration your budget so that you can make a financially sound decision for your family. The decision ultimately comes down to what matters most to you: honouring your loved one with dignity or financial constraints.
